BLOOD donations are badly needed as hospitals strive to reduce patient waiting lists while donors go on holiday.

Local hospital demand for blood is already 4.5 per cent higher than last year, said Jim Moir, Northern National Blood Service Director.

He said: "The increase in hospital operations and treatments is good news for patients and it is vital that we do what we can to help.

"I am concerned that we are coming into the holiday season with hospital demand already very high."

He asked existing and new donors to give blood before going away on holiday to prevent a shortfall.

Blood donor sessions will be held in Blackburn Public Halls on Thursday, July 16, from 2pm to 4pm and 5.30pm to 7.30pm.
