A COUNCILLOR has called for "forgotten villages" to be put back on the map.
Signs at the entrances to Rossendale which mentioned the name of the nearest village have been replaced with signs that have only "Borough of Rossendale, twinned with Bocholt" on them.
Coun Jeff Cheetham said he had had many complaints about the loss of the sign for Edenfield and told councillors: "I feel sorry that we have lost the identity of these forgotten villages."
Planning and engineering committee chairman Coun Nick Pilling said the new signs had been erected according to council instructions and there were no plans to reinstate the village signs.
He added that in Edenfield, for instance, there were enough signs advertising Edenfield post office, the Conservative Club, the primary school, and so on, for visitors to know when they were in the village.
