BURNLEY boss Stan Ternent is sweating on star trio Paul Weller, Chris Brass and Paul Smith after contract talks with all three yesterday.

But he remains "hopeful" that they will commit their futures to Turf Moor.

Both Brass and Smith still have a year to run on their present deals so Ternent has time to show them he means business in his bid to turn things round at Burnley.

The Weller situation, however, is much more urgent as he is now out of contract and free to talk to other clubs if he wants.

"That's the problem but I have made him what I believe is a very good offer," said Ternent today.

West Ham and West Brom are both believed to be showing interest in the versatile 23-year-old but Ternent added: "I don't know of any other clubs' interest. I never asked him. The only thing I know is that I want to sign him for Burnley.

"He's got a very good offer from us but the lad might want to explore other options. That's up to him.

"I spoke to all three players yesterday and I will give them a bit of time to think over what I have said.

"They might want to come back to me after the weekend and there might be a bit of give and take as there often is in these situations.

"But I would like to think we could get them sorted out before we go to Exeter later next week." Even though he is out of contract, Weller is still training with Burnley as their pre-season work gets into full swing.

"There are no problems with anything like that," added Ternent.

The manager is hoping that Weller does not follow Gerry Harrison's example and leave the club. But, after inheriting this situation, there isn't anything else he could have done about it.

At least Burnley would get a fee for Weller as he is still under 24 so a Bosman 'free' does not apply.

Harrison has trained with Sunderland for the past couple of days, had further talks about personal terms yesterday and signed a three-year contract at the Stadium of Light last night.
