YOUR report (LET, June 25) on proposals to change the road network in Blackburn to open up the south side of the town centre for commercial development just demonstrates how "recent" the planners are.

They are obviously unaware that the majority of these schemes were proposed way back in 1954 when detailed models and plans were put on public view and were well-documented in the Evening Telegraph at the time.

Much property was purchased and demolished, with swathes of land left dormant, other than those put to use by the Council as short-term car parks. This is also the reason for the shops fronting Barbara Castle Way on Preston New Road being blighted.

So 40 years on, the Council still talks about what should be done.

The Regeneration Committee is certainly demonstrating an astute new concept for the town's improvement - the reincarnation of the ideas of planners of yesteryear.
