HOW I agree with some of the comments made by Adrian Shurmer (Letters, July 3).

In Billington, we are trying to put a stop to so-called traffic calming measures which will only add danger to the roads through our village.

It all started when planning permission was given for houses on the fields behind our post office - on condition that a safe access was made.

Now a building firm has come up with a plan which is supposed to be safe.

Roads are going to be narrowed and when the new access is finished four more lanes of traffic will be created - two going into the access and two coming out.

In the morning, traffic through Billington is very heavy - made up of people driving to work, heavy lorries and, above all, buses carrying hundreds of children to the local school and beyond. It is the same from about 3.30pm to 4.30pm and with all the returning traffic around 5pm. And all through the day there is a steady stream of traffic.

Some very experienced people have looked at these plans, and they all say that to bring traffic out at the proposed access is highly dangerous.

We have sent objections to the Ribble Valley Council, 1,250 people all protested.

The council has had a copy of one of the reports that was made out for us - which states if recommendations laid down by the Department of Transport were followed, then this scheme would not be taken up as it is.

But, they just are not listening to us. They just don't want to know.

What right have these people who make these kind of decisions to play God with people's lives?

God forbid that any accident should occur. But if it should because of the measures being taken now, will those who passed this scheme say: "We should have listened"? It will be too late.
