Dawlish Town 0 Burnley 4 - Pete Oliver's match report

THE 'A' team of Andy Cooke and Andy Payton wasted no time in slipping into the old routine with a goal apiece as Burnley made a satisfactory start to their pre-season programme in sun-kissed Devon.

The strike duo scored 32 times between them last season and are likely to be spearheading the Clarets strikeforce again when the new campaign kicks off in less than three week's time.

And they proved the partnership is fit and well before making way at half-time for the young pretenders Kevin Henderson and Colin Carr-Lawton to stake a claim, the latter confirming his promise with an explosive finish for the third goal.

Payton's strike, which set the Clarets on their way, came from the penalty spot after Cooke had been bundled over by the robust figure of former Torquay defender Phil Lloyd.

In a goalmouth with almost as many undulations as the Pennines, Payton despatched the spot-kick hard and straight with the minimum of fuss.

And then on the stroke of half-time the vastly experienced front man returned the compliment for Cooke to celebrate his new three-year deal with a tap-in, after Payton's surging run through the middle had been stopped by goalkeeper Jamie Day. Paul Smith's rasping drive after 66 minutes completed the scoring and Burnley couldn't have asked for much more in their first public work-out under the control of Stan Ternent.

Dawlish won the Carlsberg Pub Cup two years ago under the guise of their social club but the Western League side were certainly not just a pub team and started brightly before running out of steam.

Their front men gave the Clarets' defence the slip a couple of times but never tested Tony Parkes with a serious effort.

Burly skipper Jason Charlesworth wasted the hosts' only real chance but nevertheless Parkes handled and kicked well when called upon and organised from the back as he looks to start the season as number one.

Stan Ternent gave all 17 players a run out and used a regulation 4-4-2 formation with the central defenders of Mark Winstanley and skipper Neil Moore swapping with Lee Howey and Steve Blatherwick after the break.

Trialisit Steve Morgan made his 'debut' at left-back and albeit against modest opposition looked the part, strong in the tackle and useful on the ball.

The central midfield berths were filled for the bulk of the game by Michael Williams and Mark Ford with Smith and Glen Little operating on the flanks. Little picked up where he left off from last season with a strong first half performance, linking well with Chris Brass who was typically efficient in his right-back role.

But Little's over exuberance did earn him a 10 minute breather in the 'sin-bin' for what former Football League referee Lester Shapter took to be a couple of over zealous challenges, although it's questionable if he would have even received a yellow card had it been the real thing.

Burnley's final ball lacked a little polish in the early exchanges but Ford gradually found his range for Smith to bring a decent block out of Day between the opening two goals.

And Dawlish were on the back foot for most of the second half as Burnley's following from East Lancashire to Plymouth and beyond, who made up most of the estimated 600 crowd, waited for the goals.

Carr-Lawton rattled the bar from close in 20 minutes into the second half. But 60 seconds later the wait was over when the young striker latched onto another through-ball from Ford and cracked a low drive into the corner from 18 yards.

Smith got in on the act moments later with an unstoppable right-footer following a bit of wizardry from Little .

And the strikers only failed to net a full house between them when Henderson put his shot into the side-netting 19 minutes from time.

The usual changeovers and reappearance of players followed thereafter and for those in an attractive looking new claret and blue strip, it had been a good afternoon's work.
