NEW faces are set to arrive at Turf Moor with Burnley boss Stan Ternent confirming that he will be seeking reinforcements for his squad before the season kicks-off.

Ternent has a group of 17 players with him here in Exeter for the club's pre-season training trip.

Paul Weller may yet return to the fold if he accepts a new deal but Ternent will still want greater competition for places when the action gets under way for real.

He said: "They are doing quite well and getting nice and fit now but obviously we need to strengthen the squad I think for injuries, loss of form and suspensions.

"If we get a few more players in the squad it keeps them on their toes and loss of form goes out of the window because they have to keep playing well to stay in the side. Hopefully that's the way it is."

Ternent is sure to have his targets and to be checking on their availability, adding: "You are always speaking to people. I will be asking about this and asking about that and then all of a sudden if I thought 'right he's the one' I would just go and sign him." Top of Ternent's wanted list is a goalkeeper but he is also likely to be on the look-out for a midfield man and possibly a striker.

He is also currently without a left-back but trialist Steve Morgan has staked a claim for a contract and again looked tidy in training yesterday. Ronnie Jepson has linked up with the Burnley party at their Exeter University headquarters but a slight hamstring problem meant he could play no part in Saturday's 4-0 win at Dawlish.

There is a slight possibility that the experienced front man could be involved for Burnley's visit to Elmore FC tonight but Ternent is already well versed in Jepson's qualities.

Ternent said that it's still a case of having a look at the player but Jepson would be keen on a move to Turf Moor if offered the chance.

He has settled his contract at Oldham and despite interest from elsewhere would like to be re-united with Ternent, who he played under at Bury, even if that meant coming in as cover for the likes of Andy Cooke and Andy Payton.

Ternent is pursuing a goalkeeper to replace Chris Woods as the only senior keeper currently on the Turf Moor books is Tony Parks. "I am in the process of doing that. I need to," confirmed the Clarets' chief. "Young Craig (Mawson) is only 18 and Parksy is 35 so I have got to do something about that, but I knew that in any case."

The next phase of Burnley's preparation comes at Elmore's Harsdon Park ground in Tiverton tonight when all of the squad will again be given a run-out.

Ternent used a 4-4-2 formation at Dawlish and although he stressed that he is currently just utilising the players at his disposal, he may persevere with that line-up to get the best out of wide men Glen Little and Paul Smith.

"I can devise a system and ask the players to conform to it but that's the wrong way round. I have got to sort something that suits them," he added.

The Clarets have enjoyed excellent training pitches on the university campus and couldn't have asked for a better surface for their mix of running and ball work.

The squad was training again this afternoon before looking to bring the curtain down on a successful trip tonight against a side that plays in a division above Dawlish in the Screwfix Direct Western League.

Chris Vinnicome was due to undergo medical checks at Wycombe today after agreeing a likely move from Turf Moor.
