1485: Malory's Morte D'Arthur - the basis for plays, books, poems, films and even musicalswas published. The author wrote it while in jail for rape!

1715: A hurricane struck the Florida coast and sank 11 Spanish galleons laden with treasure. A thousand Spaniards died in five minutes.

1910: Dr Crippen was arrested aboard the SS Montrose as she docked in Canada. He was the first criminal to be captured by wireless.

1933: Japan's national fly-catching day netted 11 million flies in Tokyo alone.

1956: Test match bowler Jim Laker took his 19th wicket - the most ever in one match.

1964: Spoilsports had their way. The last cigarette commercials were broadcast on ITV. Ads for cigars were allowed for another 25 years. because they were thought safer.

1971: The first moon buggy drove over the lunar landscape, with astronauts Scott and Irwin aboard.

1975: Teamsters Union boss Jimmy Hoffa vanished. For years he had been holding American business to ransom on behalf of his Mafia bosses. Rumour has it they quarreled -and Hoffa ended up with a concrete overcoat.

1977: A lucky lad in Manila ordered a $1,000 bank draft from a US bank - but got one for a million instead! He spent $750,000 before anyone cottoned on.

1981: William White was buried alive in Texas in a bid to break the world record. While underground, he was phoned up by a Leeds barmaid. She had heard his number given out on Radio One. In the October they got engaged, although he was still in his coffin and two months short of the record.
