A RADCLIFFE businessman's horse proved to be the cream of the crop when he took top honours in the Royal Welsh Show.

Altwalis Euros, a Welsh cob - Euros for short - beat off competition from the likes of horses owned by Harrods bosses to take top place in the light trade class.

This is the second time Mr Patrick Power has triumphed at the show. Last year his four-year-old Pontyfid Spring Fire won an award in the private driving class and championship at the event at Builth.

Mr Powers, owner of P.J. Powers based in Mill Bank, Radcliffe, has six horses. This latest achievement comes in a long list of awards won at shows up and down the country.

He said: "The win is a result of a lot of training and schooling of the horse. He demonstrates in the show ring how a trade horse should operate and can be trusted to stand still unattended."

Mr Powers added: "This is the first time I have won in this class. For as long as I can remember the award has always gone to Harrods, so it was like a dream come true when I came first."

Mr Powers said that he would now probably go on to enter one of his horses in the Horse of the Year Show at Wembley!
