NORWEGIAN Premier Division club Brann Bergen's hopes of landing a cash windfall from Burnley for potential transfer target Frank Petter Kval are set to be dashed.

Stan Ternent was impressed with the 24-year-old goalkeeper during a trial at Turf Moor this week and is set to follow up his interest.

But that will not be until the Norwegian season is finished and with the player's contract due to expire on January 1 the Clarets would not be expected to make a move until he is a free agent under the Bosman ruling.

That will come as a disappointment to Brann boss Kgell Tennfjord who was looking to cash in now on Kval who is currently on loan with Norwegian Second Division outfit Fana. Tennfjord is trying to buy Norwegian under-21 keeper Terje Skgeldestad and a source in Bergen confirmed: "He was hoping that Burnley would be desperate enough with a goalkeeping crisis to take him straight away.

"They were hoping to strike a deal because he will be out of contract soon."

Burnley have had goalkeeping problems but Ternent has moved to solve them using loan signings with Bolton's Gavin Ward returning to the side for this afternoon's visit of York City after making an impressive debut last Saturday. And despite Kval's early promise Ternent would not pursue a permanent deal without a closer look at the player, including watching him in match action after he was denied a possible run-out in the Clarets' reserves this week. "We will have him back again in three or four weeks' time because I have been quite impressed with him to be fair.

"He's a big lad, he's young and would be right for us. We need a couple of goalies," confirmed Ternent.

The Norwegian Second Division campaign finishes on September 26 and although the top-flight goes on for a further month, Kval is unlikely to be recalled by Brann who already have two experienced keepers on their books.

Despite that Kval is highly rated in his own country.

"He has a name for being very disciplined and training very hard. He is a great talent but there have never really been decent opportunities for him here," a Norwegian football writer told me.

"He has had a lot of good Press for what he has done for Fana over the last couple of seasons. He's a good character and has the physical ability to make an impression."
