JIMMY Corbett's jinxed start to his Blackburn Rovers career took a new cruel twist when he was carried off for the reserves last night.

The £500,000 summer signing from Gillingham was on his way back from a thigh injury he picked up in pre-season when he hurt an ankle in a heavy tackle against Nottingham Forest reserves.

The club were waiting for preliminary reports on the injury today.

The 18-year-old winger, who is yet to figure in the first-team picture this season, was stretchered off just before half-time of the goalless draw and Rovers were today keeping their fingers crossed that it is nothing too serious.

"We are awaiting a report on Jimmy. It was a hard tackle he went into," confirmed reserve team boss Terry Darracott.

Tore Pederson also limped out of the game but his injury was today described as a slight thigh strain which therefore shouldn't keep him sidelined for too long.

While Corbett and Pedersen undergo treatment this week, many of their team-mates will be away on international duty.

Rovers' boss Roy Hodgson saw a large chunk of his squad disappear but, unlike some club managers, he was delighted to see them go.

And it's definitely a case of the more the merrier for the Ewood boss. Callum Davidson became the latest Blackburn Rovers player to be called up to a senior squad when he linked up with Scotland. His call-up came after starting just two first team games for Rovers and he joins a lengthy list of players who have graduated to the international jet set under Hodgson's management in various parts of Europe.

"I am very pleased for him," said the Rovers boss.

"One of these days, I think I'll have a little count-up and find out how many players I have worked with who have gone on to become internationals during that time.

"I think it will certainly be up in the 50s and 60s and that's very nice.

"He's the first Scottish one I've had, I've got plenty of Swedish and Swiss ones.

"He came here with a few under-21 appearances under his belt but not really in contention at all for a place in the Scottish first team.

"Now he's very much in contention. That was on the basis of two games and two unsuccessful games, because we hadn't had a win in either of those games.

"So it's nice to see that and I hope he won't be the last one. "There are other players in the squad at the moment that I think could become internationals in the fulness of time.

"And it would be a great pleasure for me if I am here to see them do it."

Leicester City are to take disciplinary action against captain Steve Walsh following his verbal attack on referee Uriah Rennie after Saturday's Rovers at Ewood Park.

Walsh launched a stinging outburst against Rennie claiming: "The referee had everybody at each other's throats. His decisions were winding up everybody and causing needless problems. Something has to be done about him."

But the comments - from a player sent off 12 times in his career - have cut no ice with Leicester manager Martin O'Neill, whose side were beaten 1-0.

O'Neill said: "Our players have had a couple of days off, but I will definitely be taking disciplinary action against Walsh when he returns to the club."

Rovers manager Roy Hodgson was also critical of Rennie's performance, describing it as "lamentable".
