Flixton 1 Great Harwood 0

A FIRST-half strike from James Holt denied Great Harwood a hard-earned point after the Reds had dominated this Bank Holiday clash for long spells.

Manager Ian McGarry was forced to draft in Dave Sharples and Shaun Bursnell after being robbed of six members of his first team squad.

And the pair did not let him down as the visitors could have won this game with steadier finishing in front of goal.

It was Sharples who had the first chance of the match when the home keeper saved his fiercely struck free kick.

But Flixton broke the deadlock on 19 minutes when Steve Bates crossed from the right, Graham Leishman and Jody Banin both had shots spectacularly blocked by keeper Andy Johnson but Holt popped up to hammer home the rebound.

Steve Grunshaw headed over from a Dave Livesey centre and Graham Lightbown fired narrowly wide as Harwood sought a way back.

The Reds continued to press after the break as Jonathan Smith flashed a header goalwards from a Lightbown corner but the keeper tipped it around the post. And then Smith had a shot blocked on the line but it was not to be Harwood's day.
