IT WOULD be the greatest scandal to ever hit Blackburn if the proposed demolition of some, or maybe even all, of the town's tower-block flats goes ahead.

Only a year ago, the Government stated that Britain needed several million new houses in order to keep abreast of the increasing number of people who want or have to live on their own and because of other compelling demographic factors.

What a complete and utter waste of millions of pounds it would be to get rid of flats that are needed for this reason.

It is a fact that Blackburn Council allocated £500,000 in 1989 just to demolish the Shadsworth deck access flats that were known as 'Alcatraz' and were where I lived happily for many years.

Was it only me who thought that it would be far better to halve the rents in order to encourage people to occupy and remain in the flats?

The council should do this now at the tower blocks and save these valuable and expensive assets for the town and its future generations.
