STAN Ternent has had an approach for former Burnley captain Steve Davis turned down by Luton.

Ternent confirmed that he had made a pre-season enquiry about the central defender but was told by Luton Town that he was not for sale.

Davis is Burnley's biggest money export having moved to Luton for £750,000 three years ago and remains a big favourite at Turf Moor.

Undoubtedly one of the Second Division's top defenders, the 29-year-old, who would be likely to command in excess of that fee, has also scored three times in the League this season to help Luton - who entertain Burnley on Saturday - claim fifth place in the table.

"Steve Davis was a player I made an enquiry about but there was no chance. If I could have him back I would have him tomorrow," confirmed Ternent.

Meanwhile, Paul Weller has been ruled out of Burnley's home clash with Millwall tonight which should open the door for Mark Robertson to start his first game of the season in the Clarets' midfield.

Manager Stan Ternent confirmed that injury would keep Weller out after he picked up an ankle knock in Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Walsall.

Robertson impressed as a substitute at the Bescot Stadium and after recovering from an ankle problem of his own is set to win a call-up as Burnley look to get their season back on track after three successive League defeats. Burnley also have injury worries over Robertson's potential midfield partner Ronnie Jepson and striker Andy Payton, although Ternent, who will give home debuts to new signings Peter Swan and Gordon Armstrong, said he was hopeful the pair would both be fit.

Robertson has endured a frustrating start to the season with a torn hamstring keeping him out of much of the pre-season preparations followed by the ankle knock which cost him a possible appearance against York City.

The Australian youth international, who could line up against fellow countryman Tim Cahill, is therefore eager to make up for lost time.

"I feel all right. I am still trying to get my full fitness back but like I have said before I am just going to give everything I have got and see where it goes from there," said Robertson.

The 20-year-old conceded the last-minute penalty that sealed Burnley's fate at Walsall after they had poured forward in search of an equaliser.

And he stressed the need to bounce back from that disappointment.

"We are just going to have to dig deep and fight and get a result," he added.

Burnley from: Ward, Moore, Armstrong, Robertson, Swan, Brass, Little, Jepson, Cooke, Payton, P Smith, C Smith, Carr-Lawton, Scott. Millwall from: Spink, Roberts, Bircham, Stuart, Bowry, Law, Fitzgerald, Ryan, Cahill, Sadlier, Shaw, Carter, Savage, Newman, Harris.

Goalkeeper Frank Petter Kval will be joined by two other trialists in Burnley's reserves at Sheffield Wednesday night.

Manager Stan Ternent is also looking at ex-Rangers central defender Brian Irvine and a Belgian defender.
