A NEW club for Lancashire's family firms which have passed the 100-year-old mark has been launched.

The aim of the Century Club is to provide mutual support for member companies and to pass on help and advice to younger companies.

The club is being set up by the Stoy Centre for Family Business - a national association aimed at raising the profile of the country's independent firms.

"We want to provide a vehicle for members to share experiences, provide advice and support to each other and pass on their expertise to younger family businesses," said Sue Brady, regional chairwoman for the Stoy Centre.

"Family businesses have very definite strengths but can also be plagued by specific weaknesses.

"Personal and commercial issues can become intertwined and succession is a very significant concern."

A recent survey found that more than 75 per cent of North West companies are family owned or controlled. But fewer than 25 per cent will make it into the second generation and only around 14 per cent into the third.
