DETECTIVES desperate to track down a vicious sex attacker are planning to stage a reconstruction of a rape described as the worst Lancashire has ever seen.

As the third anniversary of the attack in Blackburn's Witton Park nears, police are hoping the full glare of publicity will help them.

Officers who led the investigation three years ago have been working closely with television producers.

And they are hoping the national broadcast will spark a breakthrough. .

Police are convinced the attacker is from East Lancashire and are planning to reveal new clues when the reconstruction is aired on the Crimewatch Still Unsolved programme.

Officers are convinced someone in Blackburn knows the identity of the vicious attacker and the new clues could prove a vital breakthrough.

Actors will be used to play the parts of victim, rapist and witnesses who were in the park on Sunday, October 8.

The 25-year-old, who was put through the terrifying ordeal, is still coming to terms with her horrific experiences. The local woman, who took her dog for a walk, was tied up and subjected to a series of degrading assaults.

And in the aftermath of the rape her attacker sent a series of bizarre messages and letters to the team investigating the crime.

The letters ended with a cry for help and the author claimed he wanted to admit to his horrible crime. Detectives are appealing for anyone who can help them to contact them at Blackburn police station on 01254 51212.
