THERE is no doubt that in England there are fifth-columnists and subversive elements at work, trying to stir up trouble like the communists in America in the 1940s and 1950s.

They have infiltrated every part of our national life, not least television.

So to root out these dangerous elements in our midst, may I suggest the setting up of an Un-English Activities Committee, the creation of a new national security service - something along the lines of the American FBI, with a strong man like the late J Edgar Hoover as its chief - and stronger laws on high treason.

To those who think all this is extreme, may I say that extremism to preserve our free and democratic way of life is justifiable.
