HYNDBURN planning bosses are set to throw out proposals to increase the height of a school's fence because they say it would be "overbearing" for neighbouring residents.

A report to the development services committee claims a proposed new section of fencing at Moorhead High School, Queens Road West, Accrington, should be scrapped because it would be "fortress-like".

Members meet tonight to consider an application by the county council to make the steel fence higher where it borders Orange Street on one side of the school and St Christopher's CE High on the other.

Town hall chiefs have not objected to the new boundary between the two secondary schools as long as it is painted green to match existing fencing.

But the report recommends councillors should block the fence next to the houses because of the effect it would have on residents' views.

The bid to put up the ring of steel follows a history of vandalism, breaks-in and an arson attack at Moorhead.

The plan to erect the 8ft fence topped with steel spikes has already been approved at County Hall.
