EXPERIENCED climber Bill Roberts might not have climbed every mountain - but it's not for want of trying.

The BNFL employee is hoping to become part of a breathtaking record attempt this month when he takes to the Scottish mountains in aid of charity.

Bill, of Egerton Road, Ashton, Preston, will join thousands of other walkers by climbing a peak known as "The Saddle" for the Meningitis Research Foundation.

The climb will be Bill's 220th "Munroe" - which is a mountain higher than 3,000ft.

He said: "I'm really looking forward to it because it gives me a chance to continue climbing and raise money for charity at the same time."

Climbing Munroes is popular in the Highlands - commonly known as Munroe-bagging. Bill, 51, hopes to climb all 284 mountains.

He added: "I am hoping to climb the remainder by the year 2000, by which time I will have completed 10 years of monthly travels to Scotland in pursuit of my hobby."

This is the first time Bill has climbed for charity. He will join hundreds of other climbers as they hope to set a world record as the largest ever group to climb a Munroe.

He added: "The idea is to get as many people as we can to climb the mountain and at the same time raise a great deal of money for the Meningitis Foundation - which is very worthwhile."
