A CHILDREN'S music event which has attracted audiences for more than half a century could be axed due to lack of cash.

Organisers behind the Preston Music Festival for Schools, which has been held in Preston for 52 years, say the event could be called off if they can't raise enough cash to cover their costs.

Since it was launched the festival has developed into a drama, dance and singing event which in recent years has attracted audiences of up to 1,000 people.

The festival, which is now held in the Guild Hall, has been described by some participants as the "most exciting time of my life."

But rising expenditure - including the fee for hiring the Guild Hall and transport costs - has forced the organisers to use their reserves, leaving them with a balance of just £1,000.

A spokeswoman for the event said: "The festival costs £15,000 to put on and we have made just £8,000 from ticket sales this year.

"Consequently there is a shortfall of £6,000, which must be found if we are to hold the festival next year."

She added: "Our plea is for Preston youngsters, and those who come to watch the performances, to help us keep it going.

"It would be a tragedy for it to end because it is such a unique and enjoyable event.

"We are looking for financial help of any amount to boost our three small grants. If you can help, please contact us as soon as possible."
