PROPOSALS to create new fast food joints on Morecambe promenade by the city council has met with opposition.

One owner of a nearby restaurant has said there is already opposition from cafe owners to the idea of building permanent food kiosks on the prom, and he has been joined by independent councillors.

Restaurateur Brian Pearson said: "People are worried about just who will get these kiosks when they are tendered. These will be prime sites if they go ahead."

Independent councillor Tricia Heath said councillors from political parties had come out out against it at a Morecambe Centre Service Group meeting this week, but her group were against because: "As my colleague Shirley Burns said, all those shops who have suffered two years of disruption, dust and noise, now they have a chance to regain some of their lost profits it seems they want to give prime sites away."

Council Estates Manager Graham Cox said the idea was still experimental and the department was still awaiting reaction from food outlets on the prom.
