Dewsbury Moor 6 Blackbrook 20 BLACKBROOK got their season under way with a comfortable 20-6 victory at Dewsbury Moor on Saturday.

Despite a makeshift look about their line-up and a six-point deficit after just two minutes, the visitors were far more committed to the task than their rivals. Had it not been for full-back Dave Wallace, who pulled off several try-saving tackles and several missed opportunities by the visitors the winning margin could have been even greater.

The visitors' tackling and defensive cover was outstanding, limiting the homesters main threats to solo runs.

But Delaney who shocked the visitors with a try after just two minutes which Robinson converted.

But the signs that an away victory could be on the cards came as early as the 10th minute when Brook's Chris Webber sliced through the Moor defence on a 35-metre run to the line. Although the conversion attempt failed, Brook forged ahead 10 minutes later when Derek Hardman outstripped the cover on the homesters left flank to score near the corner.

Blackbrook opened up a six-point advantage before the break when Mark Shaw touched down on the opposite flank. Again the conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

The home side made good use of the pronounced slope after the break to keep the visitors under pressure for long spells but the Brook defence was superb.

Midway through the second period Brook laid siege upon the home line with Jason Mitchell, Jimmy Forshaw and Mark Shaw particularly prominent. Finally loose-forward Andy Fisher put the game firmly out of the homesters reach with a fine 35-metre run to score beneath the posts. Jason Mitchell added the conversion and rounded off the scoring with a late penalty goal.

Andy Fisher received the Blackbrook and Construction Power Services man of the match accolade.

Blackbrook rounded off a good weekend by lifting the Alan Cooney trophy with a narrow victory over neighbours Haydock in the annual Whitebread Sponsored seven-a-side competition at Boardmans Lane.

In the Youth Section, Leigh Miners Rangers collected the Alan Bishop Trophy with victory over Pilkington.
