I WORK in the town centre and have watched the recent transformation to the outside appearance of the central library on Queen Street.

Many people commented on the wisdom of such an expression of art in an area known for windy conditions.

Several workmen were using a cherry picker for a week and the use of rail sleepers as ballast for the wire framework was truly inspired.

A wire framework was mounted on the exterior of the building along with spotlights.

As predicted, after a few days of typical Fylde weather the project was in need of further attention.

Workmen began repairs and it was amusing to watch them rejoining errant pieces of the tape measure with what appeared to be heavy duty sticky tape.

A few days later it came tumbling down again.

Just what public funds have been set aside for maintenance of this exhibit?

If the council has substantial funding available would it not have been wiser to use it for a permanent and traditional feature which could have been sited among the flower beds in front of the library.

What other foolhardy projects will be thrust upon us as Millennium madness approaches - maybe a Millennium dome erected the Promenade for seagulls' target practice!
