LEIGH'S late night 658 bus service has been saved - for now!

But if passengers don't use it over the next three months it could be lost forever.

Transport chiefs stepped in to save the 11.05pm service after operator FirstManchester decided to withdraw it.

Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority has safeguarded it, for three months at least.

Chair of the Authority, Atherton councillor Joe Clarke, said:

"This service is important for evening travellers, and I am delighted the Authority has persuaded the operator to reinstate this necessary late night journey.

"The 23.05 journey will be reinstated from Monday, September 7 for a trial period of three months, during which time its usage will be monitored by FirstManchester.

"I would therefore urge passengers to make use of this journey or face losing it.

"People do need to travel on service 658 to ensure its future operation."

As well as providing links with Leigh and Wigan, the 658 also serves Westleigh, Bickershaw and Platt Bridge.
