ALL local cabbies are to receive a caring new handbook which should help make travelling for the disabled more comfortable.

The Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority has launched the new publication "The Taxi and Private Hire Drivers' Handbook" in Leigh and Wigan.

It has been financed by the authority and the 10 district councils of Greater Manchester, and gives guidance to taxi drivers so they can provide extra aid for infirm passengers if it is wanted.

Authority member, Coun John Hilton, said: " I am delighted to have launched the handbook locally. The production has taken a lot of effort from various people and organisations and I would like to thank everyone concerned for their valuable contribution.

"The book is being given to every taxi and private hire driver in Greater Manchester so they can recognise and address the needs of passengers swiftly and courteously. I am sure it will prove a useful tool for all drivers across the region."

The handbook follows the Passenger Transport Authority's recent promise that taxi services would play an important role in an integrated transport network.

It agreed last month to hold regular meetings with local operators, to discuss issues such as the interchange between taxis, trains and Metrolink; the possible use of bus stations by taxis, and the possible role of taxis in the operation of park and ride schemes.

Cllr John Hilton (left) and Wigan Licensing Officer, Alan Baulderstone (second left), are pictured presenting local taxi drivers, Neville Strefford and Michael Brogan, with copies of the handbook. NON
