ALMOST one in four firms have not started to tackle the Millennium problem in their computer systems, a shock report has revealed.

The North West Chambers of Commerce survey, including firms in East Lancs, found close on 25 per cent had either not begun or were still at the planning stage. But almost half said preparations were either advanced or complete.

"To prevent total business failure, every company should be checking all systems and equipment to ensure that they will recognise the Year 2000 correctly,' said Sam Jones, chairman of the North West Chambers' Economic Committee.

"This is a task which demands substantial organisational planning and urgent action from senior management."

The survey also found that the estimated cost of tackling the 'bug' problem in the North West to be at least £1 billion. A quarter of all service companies with more than 500 employees expect the cost to be at least £100,000.
