WITH league leaders Chorley beaten at Netherfield, Leyland Daf lost a chance to go back to the top of the table after St Annes beat them by 16 runs at Vernon Road.

St Annes captain Brian Tennant won the toss and elected to bat.

Adrian Darlington and Eldine Baptiste added 25 runs for the first wicket before the latter was caught behind by Charlie Williams off Steven John for 9.

Seventeen runs later Darlington was caught in the slips by Duncan Catterall off John for 21, but Catterall injured his hand in the process and was taken to hospital.

St Annes found runs difficult to come by and their top scorer Russ Bradley batted 107 minutes and faced 90 balls, while hitting a six and 5 fours in his innings of 39.

Leyland professional Steven John bowled half the overs to take 4 for 49.

In reply, Daf lost their first wicket at 8 when Charlie Williams was caught by Eldine Baptiste off Brian Tennant for four..

Alan Richardson was out with the score on 25, caught behind by Duncan Whalley off Baptiste for 7.

Stuart Catterall and David Makinson took the score on to 50 before the latter was caught by Bobby Denning off John Cotton for 10.

Stuart Catterall and Alan Murray added 32 runs for the fourth wicket before Murray was caught by Denning off Gareth Evans for 15. James Atkins departed at the same total of 82 and Daf lost their last five wickets for only 24 runs. Brian Tennant was the pick of the St Annes bowling attack with 4 for 21.

The match between Leyland and Blackpool at Fox Lane was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to heavy morning rain.

The Bank Holiday sees matches on Saturday and Monday.

Leyland Daf have two home games against Fleetwood and Kendal and must win both if they are to keep up their challenge or the league title.

Leyland are away to Lancaster and Fleetwood which will be two difficult games for them, while bottom club Preston travel to Morecambe and then entertain Chorley on Monday.
