WIGAN and Leigh College students are on target for their first choice university places.

An overall pass rate of 85pc for fulltime students at Wigan campus and 83pc at Leigh includes 139 grade A passes across the college.

Twenty two subjects achieved pass rates over 90pc.

Rebecca Fan, a former pupil of Atherton's Hesketh Fletcher High School, gained grade A passes in English Literature, biology and French and is now set to take up a place at Liverpool University to study law. Mature student Mary Craig was delighted with A passes in three subjects and is about to realise a lifetime ambition by studying medicine at Manchester University.

Mr I Q Watson, head of the Wigan Sixth Form Centre, said: " I am very pleased with the dramatic improvement in the quality of our A-level grades, which demonstrates the progress made by our students.

"Almost 60pc of our passes were in the top three grades and this year's results clearly show that the college continues to meet the needs and aspirations of all A-level students."
