PUPILS in St Helens have been enjoying extra tuition during the summer break as part of St Helens Council's New Horizons summer school.

The summer school is in operation at both St Cuthbert's RC Community High and Parr Community High and the aim is to provide pupils with extra tuition prior to starting secondary school in September.

The summer school opened on Monday, August 10 for a week of study with a second week running from Monday, August 24, to Friday, August 28. Pupils have attended extra lessons involving drama, information technology and the arts.

Councillor John Fletcher, Chairman of Education, said: "This is the first summer school of its kind in St Helens. Following the completion of it there will be an evaluation of its success and it is hoped the council will be able to help more pupils in this way in the future."
