VETERAN East Lancashire MP Peter Pike is in danger of being branded an anarchist in Poland!

The middle-of-the-road Labour backbencher has run into language trouble as a result of being asked to join trade minister Barbara Roach at a conference in the East European country.

Mr Pike, MP for Burnley, has been invited to speak in his role as chairman of the House of Commons Select Committee on Deregulation at the conference on Monday and Tuesday.

But now concerned Foreign Office officials have phoned to warn him of a possible problem as the word "deregulation"

does not translate naturally into Polish.

In the latest draft programme, Mr Pike is designated as "Chairman of Anarchy".

However, officials have assured him they are doing their best to find an alternative Polish phrase.

On Sunday he flies out to Wisla near Krakow to take part in the convention on "Enterprise and Change" to be attended by senior Polish politicians and businessmen.

Mr Pike said: "As chairman of the deregulation committee I am trying to find a sensible third way between too much red tape and the free-for-all anarchy that comes from no regulation at all."
