ANGRY neighbours have won a promise of action from county council bosses about traffic calming for their area.

More than 80 residents from the Lanehead district of Burnley packed the Kibble Bank community centre last night to confront county highways chiefs over road safety issues.

At the meeting, chaired by local county councillor Terry Burns, members of the Kibble Bank Community Action group told how residents were living in fear of speeding traffic.

They provided county officers with details of injury accidents not recorded by highways bosses.

And they won a promise that county will go back and draw up a scheme of safety measures for the area.

But the residents could not win any assurance on just when any improvements will be put in place, because of the tight financial situation facing Lancashire county. Action group chairman Barbara Leyland, who says residents are determined to get action after years of being fobbed off, said today: "The meeting was certainly worthwhile.

"We received a good hearing and were able to get our points across.

"Now it is for county to draw up a plan which will make our streets safer for everyone."

Mrs Leyland said another major concern facing residents was the lack of a doctor's surgery in the Lanehead area.

Householders, she added, had to catch a bus if they wished to see a GP.

Last night's meeting agreed to send a letter to East Lancashire Health Authority calling for a local surgery for the district.
