THE public is being offered the chance to have its say in how Plunge and New Hall Woodlands in Edenfield should be managed.

Groundwork Rossendale and the Lancashire Countryside Service is asking local people for their views on the future of the site.

They are looking at how the area could be better managed to enhance various aspects including wildlife habitat and the provision of recreation facilities such as footpaths and seating.

A questionnaire has been sent to most households in Edenfield and the project leaders say the response has been encouraging, with many people offering to help with planting new trees and litter picks at the site.

The results of the public consultation are being incorporated into a management plan which sets out proposals for the future management of the woodlands. Julie Wickington, community project officer at Groundwork, said: "It is important at this stage that if you want to talk to us about the project that you do so. We want your views about the site so please don't hesitate to contact us."

The proposals will be discussed at a public meeting at 6pm on October 7 at Plunge and New Hall Woodlands, outside the guide hut.

On October 11 there will be a walk "up Plunge" to give an insight into woodland management and celebrate National Seed Collection Day.

Anyone wishing to join the five-mile walk should meet Rossendale countryside officer Tarja Wilson outside the Post Office, Bolton Road North, Stubbins, at 1.30pm.

Anyone wishing to comment on the project can contact Julie Wickington on 01706 211421.
