MARKSMAN Ian Peel today added individual shooting silver to his pairs' bronze at the Commonwealth Games.

The 40-year-old Great Harwood shooter finished the first day of the Individual Trap competition in joint first place at the Langkawi Range, 300 miles from Kuala Lumpur.

And after another 50 shots today, Peel was in a clear lead with just 25 traps remaining.

But he could not hold on to that lead and finished a close second.

England trap shooting manager Emilio Orduha said: "I felt Ian may just miss a few because he uses a strategy of working out from which direction the target is likely to be fired.

"But the computer system operating the firing of the targets broke down part-way through the final and had to be re-set.

"Therefore Ian's calculations were wasted and many other shooters use a reactive strategy - waiting until the target is launched - in the way that many soccer goalkeepers wait until a penalty has been kicked before diving."

Peel said: "Obviously, I wanted to win, but at least I am returning home on Sunday with a silver and a bronze in my luggage - that can't be too bad."

Peel held the outright lead after two rounds of shooting with a maximum score of 50 yesterday.

But, in the third and final round of the day, his perfect shooting was marred by missing two of the 25 targets.

Blackburn 800m ace Jason Lobo was today unable to secure a spot in tomorrow's final. The policeman, who works in Rossendale, was sixth in the second semi-final - the first four qualifying.

Kenyan favourite Japheth Kimutai won the semi in 1 min 46.88 secs and Lobo was 0.31 secs behind fourth-placed Bradley Donkin, with a time of 1 min 47.96 secs, more than half a second slower than his personal best of 1 min 47.29.
