A FATHER who cut his young sons' throats in a brutal knife attack has been jailed for nine years.

Chef Stephen Schofield, 33, slashed the throats of his two children when a domestic row exploded into violence.

He was sentenced to nine years at Manchester Crown Court today after pleading guilty to attempted murder.

Mr Justice Sachs said: "I bear in mind that you were a loving responsible and caring father and that you are full of remorse.

"I am aware of the background but it does not excuse what you did in any way at all and right thinking people would be revolted."

The court heard that Schofield grabbed his terrified sons, aged seven and four and "carved" their necks with a kitchen knife as they pleaded with him.

Schofield suddenly realised he was attacking the boys, and told them: "I am sorry".

The children were rushed to hospital where they needed surgery for the gaping wounds to their necks.

The eldest son, Daniel Shankly Schofield, needed a series of operations because his windpipe was completely severed and the nerve which controls his larynx was damaged.

The younger boy, Adam Paisley Schofield, also needed an operation on a five inch long neck wound.
