A DRIVER without a licence ignored a police officer and struggled in an attempt to resist arrest, Burnley Magistrates heard.

Derek Cummins, 37, had been spotted behind the wheel in the early hours and carried on driving, despite the officer's attempts to get him to stop.

Cummins, of Lomeshaye Road, Nelson, was told he must pay a total of £305 in costs and fines.

He admitted obstructing police, driving without licence, insurance and test certificate, having a defective car part and tyre and failing to surrender to custody.

Sue Riley, prosecuting, said Cummins stopped outside a house and got out. He ignored the officer and when he took hold of Cummins' arm, he pulled it away.

The policeman asked for Cummins' name and address, but the defendant was abusive and started to struggle. He had to be handcuffed to be put in a police cell.

Peter Lawson, defending, said Cummins did not have a licence and was using his ex-girlfriend's car. He accepted he shouldn't have been and apologised to the police officer.
