THE family of a one-year-old baby girl who was catapulted through a car window in a road smash today told how she was "more than lucky to be alive".

Nafisa Ali, of Johnston Street, Blackburn, escaped from the crash in Bradford on Sunday with just cuts and bruises despite being thrown from the car into a busy main road.

Witnesses who saw the accident said the tot bounced on the carriageway following the collision, which involved a BMW being driven by her uncle Syluk Ali, 48, and a Peugeot.

The impact of the crash caused the BMW to spin across the road into a lamp post and firefighters battled for more than 20 minutes to free Mr Ali from the wreckage.

Nafisa's uncle Ahmed Ali, 25, was due to visit his niece in hospital this morning.

Speaking from his home in Bradford, he said: "She's is more than lucky to be alive and the whole family is grateful for that. "Nafisa is fine now and although she has some cuts and bruises, including some on her face, she is going to be OK. She is very, very lucky. I can't tell you how we all feel."

The child, her mother Sarina Bi, 26, and relative Mohammed Yaser, 19, also a passenger in the car, were all taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary for treatment along with Mr Ali, who sustained a broken pelvis in the accident.

His brother went on: "We are all so pleased that Nafisa is all right and can't wait to bring her home but we will have to wait and see what the doctors say today. She has obviously had a real shock and she will certainly be getting spoiled with a few treats when she gets home. We're thinking of having a party to celebrate."

Nafisa, who lives with her mum and dad Liaqat, was comforted by three women at the scene who spotted her trying to crawl through the broken glass on the road.

They wrapped her in a blanket while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

Two men travelling in the Peugeot suffered minor injuries.
