SHOCKED families in East Lancashire were waiting to hear whether they had lost loved ones in an earthquake which killed 4,000 people in Southern India.

Villages were flattened and at least 8,000 people injured in the quake, which buried people under their collapsed homes.

Around 500 families from the Blackburn area originated from the Maharashtra area where the earthquake struck.
