MAY I congratulate you and Harold Heys on the well-written and well-researched article "A tower of strength" (LET, September 21) commemorating the centenary of the opening of Darwen Tower, and giving a little of its history.

I well remember the tremendous effort put in by Dr Bill Lees to raise the money to renovate the Tower. It was a fine achievement and one for which Bill will be remembered for many years.

I feel sure that the next stage should be the floodlighting of the Tower in time for the millennium.

This would be a most fitting tribute and a mark of the great affection felt for the Tower by the people of Darwen with Blackburn, and East Lancashire in general.

As your readers are aware, the Tower can be seen for miles around. It would certainly put Darwen with Blackburn on the visible map of the night sky.

LORD TAYLOR of Blackburn.
