A DECISION by the Government to put CS spray under the microscope to make sure it has no long-term adverse health effects has been welcomed by Pendle MP Gordon Prentice.

The spray is routinely carried by police officers in Lancashire.

Mr Prentice said: "I am sure it is no laughing matter being on the receiving end of a squirt of CS spray and it is no fun for the police either.

"We need to be 100 per cent certain there are no damaging long-term consequences of using this spray."

The Department of Health decided to refer CS spray to independent expert committees for their decision on its effects.

Home Office Minister Alun Michael welcomed the move but said the spray had been scientifically tested before being introduced and found not to pose any significant threat to health.
