A UNION is to launch its own survival plan for the North West's battered textile industry as it was reported that 60,000 jobs could be lost nationwide in the next two years.

The Transport and General Workers' Union plan, which will be published in the next two weeks, will argue that the business needs economic policies tailored to its specific needs if the industry is to avoid massive jobs cuts.

A spokesman for the TGWU said: "Some sectors, like textiles, do not react to economic measures like interest rates, so there needs to be a sector-based approach."

Textile companies have already been wielding the jobs axe and more than 4,000 jobs have been lost this year mainly in the North West, Yorkshire and Scotland.
