RESIDENTS in Brierfield have enjoyed the sound of silence this autumn thanks to a successful campaign to clampdown on firework-throwing youths.

In 1996 and 1997 there was an outcry in the town from people complaining about youngsters setting fireworks off in the days and nights leading up to Bonfire night.

Brierfield town councillors were deluged with complaints from people who said they were frightened by the constant loud bangs.

But a concerted campaign involving police, youth workers and shopkeepers kept the problem to a minimum this year.

Councillor Margaret Parker said: "Compared to what it has been like for the last two years this year has been absolutely wonderful.

"Two years ago in the period around Bonfire night it was absolutely incredible in Brierfield. The noise was terrific.

"It was as if mortar bombs were being set off and it was every single night of the week.

"People from all over Brierfield were fed up and we had a tremendous amount of complaints, especially from elderly people.

"Last year the situation was not quite as bad, but this year we have had no problems at all.

"It is true that some fireworks have now been outlawed but that is only part of it.

"In Brierfield the police acted very early to contact shopkeepers and ask them not to sell fireworks to youngsters.

"The shopkeepers have been brilliant as have youth workers who have been out on the streets speaking to children.

"Lots of people have commented on how good it has been this year."

"We will certainly be hoping similar things are done this time next year to make sure things are as peaceful again."
