SHOCKED Peter Capstick returned from a pleasant walk in the peaceful Yorkshire Dales to find there was no escape from the curse of car crime.

Peter, 55, returned to his R-registration Citroen Saxo, which was parked near Dent Head Viaduct, Dent, to discover windows smashed and the bodywork severely dented.

Large stones, probably from a local dry stone wall, had been thrown through the rear windscreen and two side windows, and at the roof and side of the car, leaving the interior covered in shattered glass.

Peter had earlier met some other walkers who had told him the car had been broken into but the damage was much worse than he expected.

He said: "They didn't steal anything as far as I know. There was nothing in it to steal.

"I don't know why they did not break the windscreen. I think they might have been disturbed.

"It shakes you up a bit and there's the inconvenience -- it looks like I am going to be without a car for quite a while."

Mr Capstick put his warm walking gear on to protect him from the elements as he drove his battered car home to Kentmere Drive, Cherry Tree, but he still cut his hands on the broken glass.

Kendal Police are investigating the incident but Mr Capstick said he was not hopeful of them finding the culprits.

"The police said it was unusual for something like this to happen there."
