AEROSPACE giant Rolls-Royce has won a major new order from British Airways.

The order is for the supply of upgrade kits for 108 engines to convert them to the new standard of RB211-524. Engines have been ordered for 25 Boeing 747-400 aircraft along with eight spare engines.

Rolls-Royce senior vice president airlines, Richard Smallwood, said: "British Airways has already chosen to fit six new Boeing 747-400s on order with the new B G/H-T standard of engine.

"In total the airline has committed 132 G/H-T engines, making it the largest operator of this engine in the world.''

This week union leaders expressed concern after Rolls-Royce confirmed it was looking for job cuts at the Barnoldswick site.

It is understood voluntary severance packages have been offered to older members of staff nearing retirement age.

The Barnoldswick site manufactures components including wide chord fan blades for Rolls-Royce engines.
