STAN Ternent is set to hold talks with Gavin Ward as he tries to thrash out a deal for the Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper.

Ward has returned to Wanderers following his three-month loan spell but Ternent looks keen to bring him back to Turf Moor on a permanent basis provided the price is right.

But as well as sorting out a fee with the First Division club, Ternent will also have to agree terms with the 28-year-old goalkeeper who joined Bolton on Premiership wages in 1996.

"Nothing has happened at all but I need to speak to him though.

"He might be bit expensive for us with wages and whatever but I will be having a chat with him, that's for sure," confirmed the Burnley boss.

Port Vale have not yet made a fresh move for Glen Little, although Vale manager John Rudge is expected to ask the Clarets what they would consider a good price for the 23-year-old. He can be expected to receive little encouragment, however, and Ternent's more pressing concerns centre around tomorrow night's FA Cup tie with Darlington with a visit from Manchester City awaiting the victors in round two.

"It's an absolutely blinding incentive and fantastic for the lads," admitted Ternent who will put the prospect to the back of his mind until one side can plan more purposefully after the first round clash is settled.

"Hopefully it will be us," he added.

Ternent has major selection problems for the game at Middlesbrough's Cellnet Stadium, although top-scorer Andy Payton will return to the side.

Peter Swan will not be fit to make a comeback but Ternent is optimistic that midfield dynamo Mark Ford will shake off a knee injury.

"He got a whack on the knee but I am hopeful he will be okay," said Ternent, who will be without Ward -- set to be replaced by Norwegian debutant Frank Petter Kval -- and loan player John O'Kane, as well as his cast of walking wounded.

Burnley will need to name 16 players which will stretch their resources to the limit.

Tonight's reserve match at Wolves therefore comes at an unfortunate time with Ternent admitting that in an ideal world it's a fixture they could have done without.

But the Pontins League game at Molineux (kick-off 7.00) will represent a further chance for the Clarets' youngsters to pit themselves against a First Division club on an impressive stage.

The Clarets 'A' side lost their first game in the Lancashire League Supplementary Cup when they went down 4-0 to Marine on Saturday.

However, they still top their group with two wins and a draw so far.

The under-18s beat Wrexham 2-1 with a Chris Clark effort and an own-goal. Burnley's Ian Monk and former Blackburn Rovers youngster Tony Whealing helped Leigh RMI pull off one of the great FA Cup results at Fulham yesterday.

The duo will face Kevin Keegan's big-spending Second Division side again next Tuesday in a first round replay after the Unibond League Premier Division side secured a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottgae.

Whealing, who also had a trial spell at Burnley last season, fired Leigh into a shock lead with a 25-yard free-kick.

And Monk, who lives in Burnley and started his semi-profeesional career at Clitheroe six seasons ago, went close to restoring their advantage before former Bolton goalkeeper David Felgate heroically kept Fulham at bay.

Supporters travelling to tomorrow's game with Accrington Clarets should confirm with secretary Phil Miller.

And anyone else interested in going on the trip, leaving Accrington at 3.30, should contact Miller on 01254 387230.
