CARING children packed a trailer full of food in just one day for hurricane-hit Honduras.

Pupils and staff at St Christopher's High School, Queen's Road West, Accrington, launched a rapid appeal after a plea for help from Christian Aid for victims of Hurricane Mitch.

In the space of 24 hours, boxes of rice, tinned fish, sugar and flour were sealed up and ready to be rushed by head teacher Alasdair Coates to Liverpool, where a ship waited to carry the goods to Central America.

The boxes also contained blankets and unbreakable crockery, and the school raised £151 in a last-minute collection.

Deputy head Lavinia Lancaster said: "The goods went to Liverpool and on to Southampton, where a Fyffe's banana boat was waiting to take them to Honduras.

"The response was tremendous.

"We almost needed a removal van after children brought items and parents dropped by with other goods."
