DETECTIVES are investigating a terrifying gun attack on a Darwen house.

Two bullets were fired through the windows of the house in Ash Grove in the St James Estate area of the town in the early hours of Saturday morning.

One person was in the house at the time but escaped unhurt. Two bullets have been recovered by police and used cartridges were also found outside the property.

The spent ammunition has been sent to police headquarters in Hutton for further tests. Forensic experts also carried a detailed examination of the house over the weekend. Police have not revealed the motive for the attack but have interviewed the man thought to be the target of the gunmen.

Detectives have also made house to house inquiries in the area but have failed to come up with any new leads.

And a police raid was carried out on a Darwen house but detectives in charge of the inquiry failed to turn up any new evidence. The incident took place around 1.40am and an appeal has gone out to anyone who may have witnessed the shots being fired to contact the police.

Detective Sergeant Rob Campbell, of Darwen CID, said: "We have taken a statement from the person who was in the house at the time."
