THERE is no easy solution to traffic congestion problems near Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School, councillors have been told.

Residents of Millar Barn Lane, Waterfoot, are worried about the lack of parking due to staff, pupils and school visitors taking up spaces.

They are also concerned about the street being obstructed by school buses and road safety problems caused by through traffic.

Suggestions for action have included a residents only parking scheme, a one-way traffic system and alternative parking arrangements for buses and visiting cars.

Rossendale Council's engineering and planning committee decided that borough engineer and planning officer Philip Cunliffe should discuss new safety measures with Lancashire County Council and BRGS head teacher Martyn Morris.

A report to the committee said that a residents parking scheme or parking restrictions would result in parked vehicles moving to Booth Road and neighbouring side streets.

A one way traffic system would increase vehicle speeds and although there might be land at the school capable of being used for car parking, any development within the green belt would be resisted.

The report added that there have only been two road traffic accidents on Millar Barn Lane in a five year period up to June 30 last year.
