A 51-YEAR-OLD man from Huncoat has become the latest person in East Lancashire to be struck down by meningitis.

East Lancashire Health Authority was notified of the case on Sunday and the man is now receiving hospital treatment.

A health authority spokeswoman said: "A 51-year-old man was admitted to hospital on Sunday with confirmed meningococcal meningitis."

She added that all public health procedures had been put into operation, with checks made on the man's immediate contacts.

A further 20 suspected cases have hit all areas of East Lancashire since Christmas Eve.

Of those cases, 14 are of pre-school age, one at primary school, two at secondary school and three adults.

Five cases are from Blackburn, one from Darwen, four from Burnley, two from Hyndburn, two from Pendle, three from Rossendale and three from Ribble Valley.
