A WOMAN suffered head and arm injuries when she was thrown down the stairs of her home by bogus callers.

Thelma Isherwood was taken to hospital and was too shocked to talk to detectives about the incident.

The 78-year-old, of Highfield Road, Clitheroe, was pushed down a flight of stairs when she went to confront one of the conmen, who was searching her bedroom at about 12.30pm yesterday.

Police have appealed for anyone who was in the area to contact them.

Two men called at Mrs Isherwood's home claiming to be workmen and asked to check a security gate in the garden of a neighbouring property.

One of the men kept the victim talking while the second thief searched the house. Mrs Isherwood went upstairs to confront the second man after she heard him searching her bedroom.

Neighbour Peter McDonald, of Highfield Road said: "She is a lovely old lady. She didn't deserve this.

"I cannot believe this sort of thing happens in broad daylight. Me and other neighbours are very angry and upset."

Police have searched the house and carried out door to door inquiries in the area. Officers are still not sure what was stolen from the house.

Detective Inspector Tony Harling of Blackburn CID, said: "Obviously this lady is in deep shock and we have not been able to speak to her as yet.

"This was a very serious incident and the staff at Blackburn Royal Infirmary are still trying to ascertain the lady's condition.

"We would like to speak to anyone who was in the area who may have seen these men as soon as possible."

The two men were white and were wearing council-style clothing. One of the men had a beard.

They are believed to have been travelling in a green car with a canvas back.

Anyone with information should phone Clitheroe police on 01200 443344.
