SIDDOW Common flat plans brought a howl of protests and a promise.

Locals fear the English Churches Housing Group scheme for 12 flats alongside Mather Lane canal bridge, in Leigh, might present problems.

The housing corporation shelved controversial housing schemes for the disadvantaged at Briarcroft, Howe Bridge and Grasmere Street, Leigh, following public outcry, and now residents fear similar projects at Siddow Common.

But English Churches Housing have promised: "This scheme has no link with our previous application for supported housing on the Briarcroft site.

"Following our withdrawal from this project we decided, in consultation with Wigan MBC, not to pursue the proposal elsewhere."

They say the flats will be for single people or couples and allocated on the basis of their housing needs.

Planners have approved the scheme.
